Zendaya vs. Laura Linney: Another Emmy Face-Off

Nobody likes a 2020 flashback, I know, but for the purposes of this analysis it’s unavoidable: Lockdown déjà vu is afoot in the race for best actress in a drama series. None of last year’s nominees in the category are eligible this cycle (including last year’s winner, Olivia Colman), yet somehow, five of the field’s 2020 nominees are back in contention after skipping last year’s circuit, including winner Zendaya (Euphoria). Her show, along with those of Laura Linney (Ozark), Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), and the pair of Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), were delayed by about a year due to COVID-19 production shutdowns, and have finally returned—in a few cases, buzzier than ever.

Up top, this means we may get a full-on rematch of Zendaya versus Linney, the fierce Zoom-based campaign battle that ended up in the former’s favor two years ago, even though Linney is an industry veteran with a show more popular with voters. (Ozark was nominated for best drama; Euphoria was not.) Zendaya may be a stronger contender this time; Euphoria is likely to earn a series nomination this go-round, and the star only got more intense dramatic material to play in the second season—including in the shattering fifth episode (which recently screened in-person for voters). Plus, while Zendaya triumphed in a social-distancing campaign in 2020, she’s already come out with the Euphoria cast and crew for a big FYC event in Hollywood this spring.

But then, Ozark’s final season (the second part of which dropped on Netflix last Friday) has complicated matters: Linney gets some of her juiciest material in her run on the moody drama as budding crime matriarch Wendy Byrde, and has a nasty-good time with it. The reviews are there, the attention is there, and the overdue factor may be too—this show has been a hit with the Television Academy since its inception, but neither of its leads have won their category yet. Tellingly, the Emmys have warmed toward final-season embraces of late: think Jon Hamm of Mad Men, Matthew Rhys of The Americans, Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara of Schitt’s Creek, even Colman and Claire Foy of The Crown, all recently winning the first lead-acting trophies on their last try. Linney could easily fit among that company.

While some combination of Aniston, Oh, and Comer will likely return—each star is highly regarded, and Comer is a former winner—poor reception to the latest seasons of The Morning Show and Killing Eve should keep them out of the winner’s circle. Instead, if the Zendaya–Linney balance is to be disrupted, look to a few fresh faces.

A probable breakout showing for Yellowjackets portends good things for its star, Melanie Lynskey, who’s come out of the Showtime drama with career-best showings, a Critics Choice Awards win, and a ton of goodwill going her way. The risk of her splitting votes with her costars was mitigated somewhat by Christina Ricci’s shift to run in supporting; Lynskey is the clearest lead of the bunch left, so won’t face much intra-competition. In fact, voters could love the show enough to welcome in a second cast member, either Tawny Cypress or Juliette Lewis, much as they’ve done for Killing Eve and the comedy Dead to Me (Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini).

For another hot new drama, Apple TV+’s Severance, Vanity Fair has confirmed that Britt Lower, who plays (seemingly) new Lumon employee Helly, is set for a run in the lead-actress race, while the scene-stealing—and Emmy winning—Patricia Arquette will compete in supporting. Lower lacks the name recognition of her competitors, but gives a standout performance in a show that seems due for a warm awards welcome. Sometimes, that’s enough; just ask once-unknowns like Comer or Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany. (An important caveat there: While both went on to win this category, neither was nominated for her show’s first season.) Apple’s also got newbie thriller Shining Girls, which may be without Severance’s universal acclaim, but boasts another ferocious turn from past category winner Elisabeth Moss (whose Handmaid’s Tale, conveniently, isn’t eligible this season).

Carrie Coon, previously nominated for Fargo, stands a shot for her nuanced period work in HBO’s The Gilded Age, should that costume drama click with a certain segment of voters. Bridgerton staying strong, buzz-wise, could bode well for new lead Simone Ashley, though she’s without the hype around season one’s lone acting nominee, Regé-Jean Page. Speaking of other returning contenders, if enough voters have seen This Is Us through to the end, Mandy Moore shouldn’t be counted out for her devastating final-season work. (She’s been nominated here once before, in 2019.) And maybe one of these days, the Academy will realize that Christine Baranski is only serving more greatness as the lead in The Good Fight, for the role that previously earned her six supporting-acting nods as part of The Good Wife.
