The Most Iconic Moments From “The Story Of Tracy Beaker”

“I dare you to EAT a worm.”

It was recently announced that ’00s hero and all-round shout-ey queen, Tracy Beaker, would be returning to her rightful home on CBBC in a brand new TV show called My Mum Tracy Beaker, which airs tonight!

The show follows Tracy (Dani Harmer) and her daughter Jess (Emma Maggie Davies), as they try to scrape by financially, but with a close and loving bond that Tracy missed out on with her own mum. Told from the perspective of 10-year-old Jess, the series depicts how their lives are drastically changed with the arrival of Tracy’s rich new boyfriend, Sean Godfrey (Jordan Duvigneau).

In honour of this hallowed moment, I thought it was about time we looked back at the original show, The Story of Tracy Beaker, which was a HUGE part of many a British ’00s kid’s childhood.

The series ran for five seasons from 2002 until 2005, and included a TV film, Tracy Beaker: The Movie of Me. There have since been many spin-offs from the show, including Tracy Beaker Returns, The Dumping Ground, Tracy Beaker Survival Files and many others.

Here are 18 truly iconic Tracy Beaker moments that any Brit growing up in the ’00s will remember:

Starting with, of course, the time that Rio lost his most prized possession.

And who could forget when Tracy “borrowed” Adele’s makeup to give herself this flawless makeover?

Get this girl on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK!

That time Maxy locked Jenny out of The Dumping Ground’s van because he didn’t like the shoes she’d bought him, and refused to open it until she bought him the ones he liked.

I tried this once, but I caved too soon because my mum scared me.

The ENTIRE musical episode, but specifically, this bizarre Cabaret-esque ditty from Elaine-the-pain.

No joke, I remember the words to this so clearly and I sing it all the time and NO ONE has any idea what I’m referencing.

When Tracy dyed her hair blonde and it went a sort of forest green colour.

Was anyone else lowkey afraid this would happen to them when they first dyed their hair?

Peter’s birthday disco in general, but specifically Tracy’s friend from outside The Dumping Ground, Ben Batambuze, tearing up the decks.

The scene that launched a thousand memes.

When Tracy’s arch nemesis Justine Littlewood got given a tiny TV by her dad and made people pay to watch it in her room.

You have NO IDEA how much nine-year-old me wanted that TV.

When Tracy had her first kiss with Wilson, a boy who was staying temporarily at The Dumping Ground while his mum was ill.

The OTP of The Story of Tracy Beaker. Well, that was until Wilson left the next day without saying goodbye!

The time that Tracy, Justine, Adele, Lol, Bouncer, and Louise formed a girl band and sang a song called the “Dumping Ground Blues”.

“No I don’t need nooooo Dumping Ground blueeeessssss!”

When Elaine tried to break into Tracy’s school to make her parents evening appointment.

Elaine running away to the sound of a security alarm was pure comedy gold.

When everyone dressed like Amber, the resident Joan Jett of The Dumping Ground, for a day and then she got really mad.

Make up your mind, Amber – is imitation the highest form of flattery or not?

When Tracy offered Jenny her most sincere apologies from atop her car using a megaphone.

This was a baller move, tbf.

When Duke and Elaine chased Justine and Tracy around a public park on a tandem bike.

That’s some good ol’ fashioned slapstick comedy!

Any time Tracy cried and blamed it on her hay fever.

Let’s be honest, we all pulled this move.

Just Nathan’s incredibly ’00s hair.

The frosted tips, the spiked up middle part – everything about this is iconic.

When Jackie refused to accept her grandpa was ill with Alzheimer’s and broke him out of his nursing home.

This was quite sad – Jackie didn’t want to be without her grandfather, and wasn’t able to accept the state of his mental deterioration. We all cried at this, right?

When Lol and Bouncer hacked into The Dumping Ground’s shopping order, added a ton of chocolate and sweets, and then set up a tuck shop in the garden’s wendy house.

We stan a pair of entrepreneurial brothers.

When Justine dared Tracy to eat and a worm and she DID IT!

This unforgettable moment was the talk of my school the next day!

And finally, THE THEME TUNE… “I can make my world come trueeee.”

There are only two types of people who don’t sing along when this banger comes on – people who haven’t seen The Story of Tracy Beaker, and utter monsters.

You can catch the series premiere of My Mum Tracy Beaker tonight at 5pm on CBBC and BBC iPlayer!
