Geri Halliwell is mourning the death of her older brother Max, 54, after he died in intensive care following a shock collapse at home.
Geri, 49, is “utterly broken” by the news, according to a source, as the pair were incredibly close.
“This is the most awful, devastating, heartbreaking news and Geri is utterly broken by it,” the insider told the publication.
“It has been a terribly traumatic time since the moment she heard Max had been taken to hospital, and the worst outcome which everybody close to the family hoped might not be.
“They are all rallying together but she barely knows what to say or think just now – she loved him dearly.”
Police reportedly found Max at his home in Berkhamsted on November 17 and was quickly taken to hospital for treatment, where he later died.
His cause of death remains unknown however police are not treating it as suspicious.
A spokesman for Geri told The Sun: “As you can imagine this is a difficult time and we would ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this time.”
Geri and Max shared a close bond after the singer turned to her big brother when she suddenly quit The Spice Girls in the ’90s. The pair escaped the media circus by jetting to Paris.
Her late brother featured in a 2010 episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories where he spoke about Geri’s heartbreak following her father Laurence’s death in 1993.
“I think Geri doted heavily on her father. Maybe because of the attention that my father gave her as regards to her potential,” Max told Morgan.
“He obviously saw something early on, so I’d call her a bit of a daddy’s girl, definitely.”
