Fans were quick to quip about her romance with the 49-year-old Tesla Motors CEO in the comments section, and the ‘Oblivion’ singer did not hold back in replying.
“GRIMESSS. HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS AND ACTIVELY SLEEPING WITH THE MAN WHO [IS LITERALLY DESTROYING] THE PLANET AND HUMANITY,” one TikTok user commented.
To which Grimes replied: “How is he doing these things? His whole career is about making travel/house power etc. sustainable and green. It’s worth a deep dive [white heart emoji]”.
A second user piggy-backed onto the original comment, asking the musician to confirm that her boyfriend is not a “men’s rights activist”.
“He’s not [a men’s rights activist]. Def he’s been very immature at points on Twitter but [for example] the president of spaceX is a woman, as is his right hand at Neuralink etc,” she responded.
“he’s def been immature on twitter. I wish his words would match his actions, but for most ppl I wish their actions matched their words haha”.
“ppl keep asking this but just throwing [money] doesn’t solve it. He’s trying to focus on the issues he knows he can solve and they [are] real essential issues.
“I don’t need to convince anyone haha. I accept the discourse. I’m just [really] close to it so [sometimes] I try to correct the misconceptions haha,” she concluded.
Not all fans were happy with this response, with another TikTok user responding to Grimes’ comments questioning the morality of Musk’s billion-dollar fortune.
“he is hoarding 150 billion dollars he is the real essential problem and [you are] an accomplice and an enabler,” the user said.
Grimes rebutted: “Actually [pretty] much all of it goes into R&D on sustainable transport etc. “net worth” is the valuation of the companies – not pure cash.”
The original commenter returned, saying “But lithium isn’t sustainable or green. So things like Tesla car batteries are just as bad as fossil fuels. I just don’t think that’s sustainable. [red heart emoji]”.
“Tesla has almost eliminated lithium from their batteries actually. They’re re-inventing the whole issue of batteries to remove the bad shit,” the singer said.
Not everyone was buying it, with one TikTok user saying, “Girl he’s a comic book villain are you kidding”.
There are a whole lot of accusations to unpack in this comments section.
When it comes to Musk being immature on Twitter, he does have a history of making controversial statements across his social media accounts.
Most notably, the SpaceX CEO tweeted about taking “the red pill”, to which Grimes’ mother, former Crown prosecutor and journalist Sandy Garossino, slammed Musk in since-deleted tweets for “blaring MRA [men’s rights activist] bulls–t” and not taking care of Grimes post-partum.
The “red pill” is a reference to The Matrix (1999) where Keanu Reeves‘ character, Neo, is offered a choice: take “the red pill” to learn the truth about the Matrix or take “the blue pill” to live life as normal and forget everything.
“The red pill” is also a reference to highly politicised memes online, associated with right-wing views, including men’s rights activism.
Musk also tweeted “Pronouns suck”, to which Grimes replied “I love you but please turn off [your] phone or give me a [diall]. I cannot support hate.”
“Please stop this. I know this isn’t your heart”.
As for the claims that Musk and Tesla are ‘destroying the planet’ with lithium batteries, it is true that lithium-ion batteries, of which Tesla’s vehicular batteries are currently comprised, are not completely environmentally friendly.
In Australia, only two per cent of lithium-ion waste is recycled, with a majority of the 3,300 metric tonnes often ending up in landfill. In landfill, metals and ionic fluids from the electronic waste can leak into and damage the environment.
Although Grimes claimed that Tesla has “almost completely eliminated lithium from their batteries”, there does not seem to be much evidence to support this.
Tesla is coming out with new ‘tabless’ batteries, however they will be cobalt-free to make the electric vehicles more affordable, with the exact lithium-ion component unclear.
According to Forbes, Musk’s net worth is US$179 billion (approx. $230 billion), however details of how he stores or spends his fortune are unclear.
Grimes, whose given name is Clare Elise Boucher, and Musk made their red-carpet debut at the Met Gala in 2018.
Musk has previously been married three times, twice to actress Talulah Riley, and shares five sons — twins Xavier and Griffin, and triplets Damian, Saxon and Kai — with his ex-wife, author Justine Wilson.
