The couple have been together since 2006 and throughout the ups, downs and in-betweens, they have been each other’s biggest cheerleader.
True to form, the supermodel was by her husband’s side on February 8 when he won an unprecedented seventh Super Bowl.
Here are five ways they came to be #RelationshipGoals…
How they met…
The couple met on a blind date back in December 2006, with Brady later admitting on The Howard Stern Show that he wasn’t ready for a relationship at the time.
“I got introduced to her by a mutual friend. It was a ‘blind date’ — although it wasn’t blind because I knew what she looked like,” the NFL star said in the 2020 interview.
“I had gotten out of a relationship and she had been out of a long-term relationship that she had, so when we met I wasn’t quite sure if I was ready for a relationship. I didn’t think I was, but we met and hit it off. When she walked in I just thought she was the most beautiful woman I’ve seen in my life.”
The feeling was mutual for the former Victoria’s Secret star.
“I knew right away — the first time I saw him,” she told Vanity Fair in 2009. “The moment I saw him, he smiled, and I was like, ‘That is the most beautiful, charismatic smile I’ve ever seen!’ We sat and talked for three hours.”
The couple went on to marry three years later and now share two children, Benjamin, 11, and Vivian, eight.
How he proposed…
Brady reportedly proposed to Bündchen at his apartment in 2008. He lied that his apartment was flooding so she rushed over to help, only to find him on bended knee.
Her first reaction? She screamed at him to get up because he was recovering from surgery to repair his ACL at the time.
“When he proposed to me he made up this whole story about how my apartment was flooding. And I ran over there to try to fix the situation, and when I got there, the whole apartment had candles and rose petals everywhere,” Bundchen told Vogue in 2018.
“And then he went down on his knees and I’m like ‘Get up!’ because he’d just had surgery and had like three staph infections. I’m like, ‘What are you doing?!'”
Needless to say, she said yes and the couple exchanged vows in two different ceremonies. Given Bündchen has roots in both the US and her native Brazil, they wanted to have two events for family and friends.
They first married in a small ceremony at St. Monica Catholic Church in California before saying ‘I Do’ again two months later on the beach of Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, where they own a house.
“We planned it in like 10 days, and it was perfect,” Tom told GQ of their first wedding. “We went back to the house, and I barbecued aged New York strips. We had champagne, a cake, some ice cream. It was a great night.
“I think you always have this idea that weddings need to be 200 people and you invite everybody, and I’m all for it if people want to do that, but I think there was something special about just having our parents there.”
How they became the Brady Bunch…
Together with his ex Bridget Moynahan, they really are the Brady Bunch — the NFL player shares a child with the actress, a son named Jack, now 13.
The couple split in early 2006 only to learn months later that Moynahan was pregnant with his child. At the time, the quarterback had already begun dating Bündchen. But the trio have managed to make their family dynamic work and today they consider themselves good friends and co-parents.
So close is Bündchen to Jack that she doesn’t like to refer to herself as a “stepmum”, but rather a “bonus mum”.
“I don’t like the word ‘stepmum,'” she said in an Instagram Q&A last year. “I use the [words] ‘bonus mum’ because I feel like it’s a blessing in my life. I feel so lucky that I got to have an extra, wonderful little angel in my life.”
But Bündchen is the first to admit it wasn’t easy to get to where they are today.
“Two months into our relationship, Tom told me that his ex-girlfriend was pregnant,” she wrote in her memoir, Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life. “The very next day the news was everywhere, and I felt my world had been turned upside down. Needless to say, that wasn’t an easy time but it was a time that brought about so much growth. Jack, my bonus child, has been a huge gift and blessing in my life.”
How they have each other’s backs…
Through good times and in bad, they have each other’s backs. In 2015, Brady Tom was suspended from the NFL for allegedly using under-inflated footballs in the American Football Conference Championship Game of the 2014-2015 NFL playoffs. The scandal would later be dubbed “Deflategate”.
But Bündchen remained strong throughout the scandal, later telling CBS, “My father always says the quality of your life depends on the quality of your relationships. And I think no matter how challenging it was, we were always being supportive of one another. And you know, that’s the most important thing you can have in your life … a support system and love.”
In a 2019 interview with Good Morning America, Brady said Bündchen was his “rock” and thanked her for all she does for him and their family.
“I married someone that … I know is my life partner,” he said on the program. “She’s just one of the most caring, nurturing people in the world. The way she takes care of our family when I’m working, sacrificing a lot of her dreams. I can only tell her I love her so much.
“She’s got my back. I have no doubt about that. And she knows I have hers.”
How they keep it real…
While they appear like the perfect couple, Brady and Bündchen say their relationship is not perfect. In her memoir, the supermodel revealed that like other couples, they often snap at each other.
“You’re overwhelmed and tired when you’re not the nicest partner,” she wrote in her book. “When someone you love is happy, it makes you happy. Or if they’re sad, it makes you sad. You suffer with them and you have joy with them.”
But Brady said their challenges have only strengthened their bond.
“I’m blessed to find this life partner that we all kind of seek at different times in our lives,” he said in a previous interview. “We found each other at the right time. We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs together, and in so many ways, that’s kind of built our relationship so strong.”
