Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge announced they will be updating the 2005 action-comedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith for Amazon Studios late Friday. Just how much are they updating it? Well, the news came to us via a cheeky Instagram story, so that certainly clocks as being with-the-times.
Instagram stories eventually disappear like like tears in the digital rain, but luckily for us the good people at @phoebewallerbridgesource re-uploaded most of the short video between the Atlanta and Fleabag creators. It includes some dance moves and classic “direct-to-the-lens” looks. Glover’s version then cut to the surprise that Mr. and Mrs. Smith is coming to Amazon in 2022. It also added that Francesca Sloan, a writer and producer on Fargo, is the co-creator.
That first needle drop you hear is “Mood” by 24kGoldn featuring iann dior. The second one fakes you out, first sounding like “Put Your Head on My Shoulders” by Paul Anka, before revealing itself to be the sample from “Te Amo” by U R I M E N. If this little teaser is any indicator of what the show will be like, our Shazam apps better start getting in shape now.
Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said in a statement that “Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team.”
The pair both appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story, with Glover as the young Lando Calrissian and Waller-Bridge voicing the droid L3-37.
The 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith was written by Simon Kinberg and directed by Doug Liman, and starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a bored married couple who are surprised to learn they are both secret assassins for competing spy agencies. (Movies!) It made close to half-a-billion dollars in worldwide box office, no doubt aided by the fact that Pitt and Jolie stated that they fell in love on set. (The power couple stayed together for another 11 years.)
