Princess Eugenie has given birth to a son, Buckingham Palace announced on Tuesday. The baby boy, who is eleventh in line to the throne and the great-grandson of the Queen, was born at 8:55 Tuesday morning and weighed in at a healthy 8 pounds, 1 ounce. The Palace have said that he was safely delivered at London’s Portland Hospital, where Meghan Markle gave birth to baby Archie and where Eugenie was born.
Eugenie’s husband Jack Brooksbank was at the birth and Buckingham Palace said that the couple and their baby “are both doing well.” The couple broke with tradition by sharing a black and white photo of their son’s tiny hand on Instagram before posing for any official photographs as a family.
The boy, whose name has not yet been announced, is the princess’s first child and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s first grandchild. The palace said that the Queen, who has become a great-grandmother for the ninth time, has been informed and is delighted with the news.
Eugenie, 30 and Jack, 34 have been living with their parents at Royal Lodge in Windsor for much of the Covid lockdown. They have a home, Ivy Cottage at Kensington Palace, but now that they are a family of three they are likely to want a bigger royal residence. Meghan and Prince Harry have also given the couple a set of keys to their Windsor property Frogmore to use while they are overseas.
Although Eugenie is known as “Her Royal Highness” through her birthright, sources close to the couple say they do not want titles for their children. Sources told Vanity Fair last year that their wish is for their child to live an “ordinary life” as far as possible.
“Eugenie knows that a title can be a curse as well as a blessing and she and Jack want their child to live an ordinary life and eventually work to earn a living,” the insider said at the time.
